Carrying 80 thousand tons of Liquified Natural Gas, the 1981-Built, Algerian-Flagged LNG carrier Ramdane Abane blacked out in front of Kilitbahir Point in the Çanakkale Strait of Turkey.
The vessel was being escorted by three tugs during the incident.
The pilot onboard, Capt. Alper Mut, was able to control the drifting of the ship with the help of the escorting tugboats.
Engine breakdown took place at around 09:00 LMT during the ship was turning the narrowest point of the Dardanelles, the Kilitbahir narrows.
The reason for the black-out is yet unknown. The 274-meters long, 42 meters wide ship had 12 meters of draught during the incident. LNG carrier is a rather old one 1981 built, 33 years old.
