THE Port of Los Angeles posted a stronger overall performance than the Port of Long Beach after LA handled 650,977 TEU in March, representing a year-on-year increase of 12.7 per cent, helping total first quarter volumes rise 4.6 per cent to 2,208,733 TEU.
Within the March total, imports were up 12.4 per cent to 297,187 TEU but exports were down 2.9 per cent to 158,924 TEU. Empty containers grew by 30.2 per cent to 194,866 TEU.
'Despite global trade uncertainties, we experienced strong first quarter growth,' said Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka.
'I commend our supply chain stakeholders who have processed record amounts of cargo in recent months and we anticipate greater efficiency improvement with the PortOptimizer that was rolled out in the first quarter. Retailers are forecasting an uptick in summer consumer demand and we are ready for those boxes.?
Long Beach container throughput in March decreased 3.9 per cent year on year to 552,821 TEU. Imports fell 7.8 per cent to 247,039 TEU, while exports dropped by 7.7 per cent to 131,436 TEU. Empties rose 5.7 per cent to 174,346 TEU.
Total LB first quarter volume dropped by 4.7 per cent year on year to 1,806,723 TEU, however, port officials said the result marked the second busiest first quarter in the port's history.
'With warehouses full from shippers rushing to beat the looming threat of escalating tariffs, shipments slowed somewhat,' said port of Long Beach executive director Mario Cordero said in a statement. 'It's going to take some time for inventory to cycle to markets and for typical growth to resume.'
