THE Port of Los Angeles volume was down 5.8 per cent year on year in September at 730,306 TEU while the adjacent Port of Long Beach was up 4.1 per cent year on year to 655,624 TEU.
LA imports were down 9.4 per cent to 383,963 TEU, while exports fell 17.5 per cent to 124,286 TEU. Empties were up 6.3 per cent to 383,551 TEU.
"While we fell short of last September's exceptional volume of 775,000 TEU, I'm encouraged by the productivity our terminals and supply chain partners have demonstrated over the past six months," said LA port director Gene Seroka.
Long Beach said that third quarter volume came in at 2,049,520 TEU, which marked the first time volume for any quarter reached that level while signaling a return to pre-recession levels, too.
This follows August's 703,652 TEU, which Long Beach officials said at the time serves as a "clear sign" that strong customer confidence in the port is intact.
LB imports in September fell 1.9 per cent annually to 332,909 TEU, with exports up 6.1 per cent at 125,639 TEU. Empties headed up 14.6 per cent to 197,706 TEU in September.
Year-to-date through September, total Long Beach volumes were up 5.2 per cent annually at 5,355,939 TEU, with imports up three per cent at 2,714,613 TEU and exports down 6.2 per cent at 1,146,413 TEU.
