According to local reports, on the morning of January 29, the general cargo ship named Samsung No.1 which has been built in South Korea in 1984, suffered massive water ingress from the front cargo hold area about 4 nautical miles southwest off Cheongsando Island. She was sailing from Jeju to Nokdong Port.
Wando Maritime Rescue and Coast Guard rescued 8 crew members from the ship, which quickly started to sink. It was noted that the ship sank in Seoul at 08:32, shortly after the crew's rescue.
