KOREA Maritime Transport Co (KMTC) has sold for scrap a 21-year-old feeder containership, the KMTC Hongkong, that caught fire at the Thai port of Laem Chabang on May 25.
Best Oasis is said to have paid US$425 per light displacement tonne (ldt) for the fire ravaged 1,585 TEU vessel, in a deal that also includes 390 tonnes of bunkers, reported Singapore's Splash 247.
The blaze, resulting from non-declared highly flammable toxic chemicals including calcium hypochlorite loaded onboard the ship, sent noxious smoke and acidic ash raining down on nearby villages. Some 200 people required treatment in hospital owing to contact with toxic substances from the blaze.
