JAPANESE shipping company "K" Line has for the first time presented environmental awards to staff members around the world under the direction of its long-term management plan, "Environmental Vision 2050".
A special excellence award went to "K" Line (Nederland) BV for issuing its own sustainability report that gave clear and detailed information about the company's environmental preservation efforts and activities.
A statement issued by the group said special environmental awards were presented to officers and crew of LNG carrier Tangguh Palung, who engaged in a volunteer beach cleaning initiative on Lembeh Island in Indonesia while the ship was at anchor in the harbour.
Nitto Total Logistics Ltd also received a special award for voluntary cleaning activities around container terminals, warehouses and offices that are being carried out in collaboration with partner companies at lunch time and before office opening hours. So far the activities have been carried out 48 times with participation of 600 people in total.
Daito Corporation was honoured for implementing since 2009 its "Ecocap" recycling programme that involves collecting plastic bottle screw caps at its offices for recycling. Proceeds from the sale of the caps are used to buy vaccines for developing nations.
Naigairikuun Co Ltd was recognised for fitting digital tachographs in their trucks to monitor their operation status in real-time online, in order to achieve a reduction in fuel consumption.
The final winner was Bangkok Cold Storage Service Ltd ("K" Line Thailand) for significantly reducing the consumption of electricity through the use of renewable energy and introduction of innovative energy-saving technology at their newly-constructed refrigerated warehouse.
