BRITAIN has unveiled its largest-ever maritime sanctions package against Russia, targeting up to 100 tankers used in its shadow fleet operations, reports Ventura, California's gCaptain.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the sanctions at the joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) summit in Oslo, citing threats to subsea infrastructure and European maritime security.
The JEF is a UK-led military alliance involving 10 nations, to responding to security threats to northern Europe.
Nordic Warden uses artificial intelligence to analyse data from sources like the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which ships use to broadcast their positions. If a vessel is deemed a potential risk, the system monitors it in real time and sends warnings to JEF nations and NATO allies.
The initiative was launched following reported damage to the Estlink undersea cable in the Baltic Sea, which Finnish authorities suspect may have been caused by a Russian tanker.
The shadow fleet has been blamed for damaging critical subsea assets through unsafe practices, often sailing without proper certification or by disabling locator systems.
In response, the JEF activated 'Nordic Warden,' a UK-led monitoring system covering 22 areas including the English Channel and Baltic Sea, from its Northwood headquarters.
Mr Starmer vowed to dismantle the shadow fleet and block Russia's oil revenues, citing declining Russian energy earnings and rising inflation as evidence of sanction impact.
The UK plans further actions against individuals involved in shadow fleet operations, part of a broader JEF partnership with Ukraine on training, interoperability, and counter-disinformation.
