THE Jiaxing International Container Feeder Port on the Grand Canal in northern Zhejiang province posted 255 per cent year-on-year increase in throughput to 12,344 TEU in January, Xinhua reports.
The terminal, having already boxed 100,000 tonnes grain in 2012, has held talks with a number of carriers and grain manufacturers on using containers to carry bulk cargo, aiming to containerise 10,000 TEU of corn this year.
The terminal saw a robust growth of 21 per cent in its foreign trade cargo throughput in this month, thanks to the newly signed connecting carrier agreements (CCA) with "K" Line and OOCL that have brought the terminal more trade cargo to and from Europe and America.
Jiaxing International Container Feeder Port has been in a trial operation for two years. It is cooperating with carriers on river-sea intermodal services. Such transshipments have taken up 44 per cent of the throughput total of the terminal. It is also operating three feeder lines to Shanghai, Taicang and Zhapu.
The terminal is also seeking to cooperate with forwarders and manufacturers of paper, timber, corn and sugar on offering one stop service for the customers to attract more cargo.
