THE japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA) has posted a 7.9 per cent year-on-year increase in Japanese container exports to the US to 54,409 TEU in October, reports London's Port Technology.
JIFFA reported a 10.2 per cent decrease in September. Direct exports accounted for 36,181 TEU, up 25.1 per cent year on year, while the remaining 18,228 TEU were transshipped, down 15.3 per cent.
According to JIFFA, container transshipment slipped below the 40 per cent mark to 33.5 per cent. Containers transshipped in South Korea fell 15.8 per cent to 11,945 TEU as a result of the start of a new route from Yokohama to the US east coast.
China was responsible for 2,539 TEU, a 10.2 per cent decrease, while Taiwan was responsible for 2,007 TEU, an 8.8 per cent decrease.
Meanwhile, Japan's imports from US totalled 49,433 TEU in September, a 4.3 per cent decrease from the same month in 2022.
They included 40,153 TEU of direct shipments, up 0.4 per cent, and 9,280 TEU of containers carried via third nations and regions, down 20.5 per cent and accounting for 18.8 per cent of the total.
Transshipments in South Korea totalled 5,061 TEU, a 14.1 per cent decrease; in Taiwan, 2,380 TEU, a 40 per cent decrease; and in Singapore, 771 TEU, a 21.6 per cent decrease.
By port of destination, 15,442 TEU were imported to Tokyo, an increase of 8.7 per cent; 11,271 TEU to Yokohama, an increase of 18.4 per cent; 8,469 TEU to Kobe, an increase of 5.5 per cent; 5,156 TEU to Nagoya, an increase of 20.4 per cent; and 1,045 TEU to Osaka, an increase of 36.6 per cent.
In July, Port Houston announced that its container volumes were the highest of any previous July on record.
Two months later, it was reported that the container throughput of Chinese ports from January to August of 2023 hit 203.7 million TEU, a year-on-year increase of 4.8 per cent.
