OCEAN Network Express (ONE), a joint venture between NYK, MOL and 'K' Line, has called on the Malaysian government to streamline procedures at its ports, warning that the nation's logistics sector will lose out to rivals in neighbouring countries because of red tape.
There are seven major ports in Malaysia, each run by a different authority.
'I have told the minister to harmonise port terminal operations in Malaysia,' said ONE's managing director in Malaysia Justin Chuo, who was referring to Minister of Transport Anthony Loke.
In response Mr Loke vowed to examine ways to cut bureaucracy and enhance the competitiveness of the sector, reported Japan's Nikkei Asian Review.
ONE suffered a net loss of US$120 million in the first quarter that ended in June on 'operational teething problems' and higher bunker fuel prices.
Nevertheless, Mr Chuo is confident that ONE's Malaysian operations will handle 500,000 TEU annually, beating the 300,000 TEU achieved by the its parent companies prior to forming the merged entity.
