Indian Railways will introduce strict baggage regulations at major stations, requiring passengers to weigh luggage and pay fines for excess or oversized items, reported the Times of India.
Under the new rules, travelers must pass their bags through electronic weighing machines at key stations. Weight limits will be enforced by class: 70kg for AC First Class, 50kg for AC Two Tier, 40kg for AC Three Tier and Sleeper Class, and 35kg for General Class. Oversized baggage may incur penalties even if within weight limits.
The initial rollout will cover stations in the North Central Railway zone, including Prayagraj Junction, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri and Etawah. Platform access will be restricted to passengers with valid tickets, which will serve as boarding passes. Visitors must purchase platform tickets, now rebranded as visitor passes.
Prayagraj Junction is undergoing a Rs960 crore redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The upgraded station will feature a nine-storey terminal with modern amenities such as high-speed Wi-Fi, solar energy systems, rainwater harvesting, automated ticketing and digital displays.
indian Railways also plans to introduce premium retail outlets at revamped stations, offering clothing, electronics and travel accessories. Officials say the changes aim to improve passenger experience and generate additional revenue.
The new infrastructure is designed to be inclusive and environmentally sustainable, with divyang-friendly features and solar-powered systems. Prayagraj's transformation is expected to serve as a model for future upgrades at Kanpur and Gwalior.
