Indian port box volume dips as major terminals report lower throughputs
CONTAINER volume at major ports in India declined 4.73 per cent year on year from April to July, the first four months of fiscal year, according to a statement from the Indian Ports Association.
Throughput at the 12 state-owned ports, which account for most Indian containerised trade, totalling 2.51 million TEU compared with 2.63 million TEU in the same period last year. Containerised tonnage fell six per cent to 38.5 million tonnes.
At the country's largest container terminal, the Port of Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva), throughput was down five per cent year on year to 1.38 million TEU.
The Port of Chennai, the second-largest box gateway, moved 503,000 TEU, down from 537,000 TEU.
Kolkata Port's volume totalled 198,000 TEU, down from 203,000 TEU, while the Vallarpadam Transshipment Terminal in Cochin Port handled 112,000 TEU, down 7,000 TEU year on year.
Tonnage through major ports in the four-month period was flat at 185.5 million tonnes. Kandla handled the highest volume at 30.8 million tonnes followed by Paradip at 23.1 million tonnes; Nehru, at 20.7 million tonnes; Visakhapatnam, at 19.7 million tonnes; Mumbai, at 17.7 million tonnes and Chennai, at 17.5 million tonnes.
In the last fiscal year ending March 31, India's ocean trade through major ports was estimated at 545.68 million tonnes, down 2.6 per cent from 2011-12, with container throughput remaining flat at 7.71 million TEU.
