THE Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) Shipping Emissions Conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus from October 22-23, to discuss mandatory rules on carbon emission control.
IMarEST has special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).
Ex-International Maritime Organisation (IMO) chairman Andreas Chrysostomou with give the keynote speech entitled: "Achieving sustainable shipping".
Organisers highlighted EU approval of mandatory rules for shipowners to measure carbon emissions. But the proposals will be the subject to months of debate before the European parliament approves them and they become law.
Said IMarEST chief executive David Loosley: "The New Chapter 4 to MARPOL, Annex VI 'Regulations on energy efficiency for ships' makes mandatory the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new ships. The EEDI is expected to stimulate development of a ship from its design phase, and this conference is where to hear about them! New dates are also looming for NOx and SOx."
Themes discussed with be emissions regulation, fuel costs and availability, the emerging energy mix, energy efficiency in design and energy efficiency in operations.'
The conference is supported by the International Association for Catalytic Control of Ship Emissions to Air (IACCSEA), InterManager, InterTanko, the Nautical Institute, Safety4Sea, Shipbuilders & Shiprepairers Association (SSA) and the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA).
