HUTCHISON Ports Gdynia, a subsidiary of Hong Kong's Hutchison Ports Group, has achieved a milestone of handling four million TEU since the facility began in March 2006.
The fourth millionth container was discharged from the Durande, serving Hapag-Lloyd's NPX (North Sea Poland Express) service.
Since 2005, Hutchison Ports has carried out a number of investment programmes at the Port of Gdynia spending over EUR100 million (US$118.7 million) which transformed the former shipyard company owned by Gdynia Shipyard into a modern container handling facility.
Bulgarskie Quay, which is currently undergoing modernisation, will as from Q4 2021 enable GCT to accept bigger vessels able to enter Gdynia Port (max length 367m/max draft 13.0m). Bulgarskie Quay is the most modern container quay in the Port of Gdynia equipped with two rail gauges of 20m and 30.48m and axle loads sufficient for quay cranes with the outreach of 70m. The quay will be dredged up to 15.5m. In the next phase Port of Gdynia has planned dredging of the inner basins and completion of the widening of the turning basin, which once completed will allow to accept vessels up to 400m long and with draft 15.0m.
These developments are part of an ongoing process to continuously enhance the capabilities of Hutchison Ports Gdynia and its transition toward becoming the region's port of choice not only for feeder and short-sea trades but also for direct calls with ocean-going container vessels, reports UK's Ship Management International.
