FEAR of being sued for selling damaged goods increases the likelihood that the Hoegh Osaka's entire GBP35 million (US$52.7 million) cargo of 1,400 mostly unscathed luxury cars will be scrapped, reports London's Daily Telegraph.
This is what happened in 2006 when 4,700 new Mazdas were scrapped after the another car carrier developed a 60-degree list off Alaska, a similar to the starboard list of the 51,000-dwt Hoegh Osaka that went aground outside of Southampton.
Fears of litigation arising from supposed salt corrosion and concerns about the effect of being suspended at an angle were all cited to justify a mass crushing of Mazdas after MOL's 18,992-dwt Cougar Ace transporter ran into trouble nine years ago.
Many suspect the same fate awaits the 1,200 Jaguars and Land Rovers, 65 Minis and 105 JCB excavators recovered with little visible evidence of damage. Dozens of unscathed new cars were driven off the ship into a parking area on the Southampton docks.
Though some of the vehicles did show signs of cosmetic damage and at least one had to be removed using industrial forklifts trucks, most appeared to be in good condition.
