THE deliberately grounded car carrier, the 51,000-ton Hoegh Osaka, that flopped on its port side off Southampton, was again upright on the high tide and was to be towed off under the coast guard supervision.
"A decision on the next phase of the salvage operation will be made after the assessment," said UK Maritime and Coast Guard.
Packed with Range Rovers and Land Rovers, accounting for most of the 1,400 vehicles aboard the cargo is covered by insurance, said a spokesman for the British carmaker, owned by India's Tata Motors Ltd.
The company has not given any indication of the value of its cargo. According to Reuters calculations, 1,200 of the company's luxury cars could be worth US$151.80 million.
Salvage experts have yet to report back on the condition of the cargo, which may have moved as the vessel listed to a near 45 degree angle.
Shipowner Hoegh Autoliners said its crew deliberately beached the ship after it began listing dangerously following its departure from Southampton, bound for Germany.
The BBC reported that local police said the ship, was near shipping channels into Southampton, but all was "under control".
Hoegh Autoliners said "salvors are continuing their assessments of the vessel and analysis in order to prepare for a safe and successful salvage operation.
"Onboard inspections by the salvors are to gather information for the salvage plan. Inspections show that most cargo is still in position held in place by lashings. But all decks had not been accessed," said the company.
"There has been some water ingress resulting from a small crack in the hull, which is reported to have been caused by one cargo item that has shifted. This crack has now been temporarily repaired," it said.
