KOREA's Hanjin Shipping, Singapore's Pacific International Lines (PIL) and Japan's "K" Line are to offer a weekly intra-Asia service linking China, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam.
The new China Straits Express (CSE), will be launched from Qingdao on April 25. The service will be operated by four 2,500-TEU ships and will turn in four weeks.
The port rotation will be Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Laem Chabang, Singapore, Port Kelang, Laem Chabang, Ho Chi Minh City, Xiamen and back to Qingdao.
The CSE adds to the list of intra-Asia services recently launched or restructured that make a good use of the numerous 2,500-TEU ships that recently became redundant, Alphaliner notes.
Many of these ships became idle when the capacity of vessels deployed on intercontinental services was upgraded from the 2,500-TEU scale to ships ranging between 3,500 and 5,000 TEU.
In addition, ships of 2,500 TEU were set free after the end of the congestion at the port Manila, which artificially kept busy several ships of this size.
