THE Italian Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has placed a US$320 million order for four 11,000-TEU ships from Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction (HHIC) Philippines yards in Subic Bay, reports Oslo's Tradewinds.
MSC has earmarked the vessels, going for $80 million apiece, for the north-south trades in a loop of 10 ships and plans to charter the rest.
The MSC deal is the third boxship contract for HHIC-Phil this year. It earlier received one for a same-size vessel from Greek owner Costamare and three of 20,600 TEU from French carrier CMA CGM.
A source familiar with the Subic yard says it has almost sold out all of its 2017 berth slots.
"HHIC is now channelling its attention to its Youngdo facility in Korea," said the source. "It is focusing on midsize gas carriers, tankers and containerships."
Last month, HHIC Youngdo won contracts to build two 38,000-cubic metre ammonia carriers from Global United Shipping for $52.5 million each and scheduled for delivery in 2017. The deal is its only one this year.
HHIC Youngdo is one of the contenders competing for Evergreen's 20 boxships of 3,000 TEU and it is also in discussions with Stena LNG for two ice-class LNG carriers of 18,000 cubic metres.
MSC is the second biggest containership owners, after Maersk, with a fleet of 465 vessels of 2,439,000 TEU. Its orderbook includes three newbuildings of 19,200 TEU at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering and ten 9,000 TEUer from Chinese yards.
