THE G6 Alliance's AZX service has started calling at the Nova Scotia port of Halifax, with the arrival of the 8,063-TEU OOCL Southampton, the largest ship to call at the port to date.
"CN welcomes the new G6 Alliance service which will make the port of Halifax more attractive to inland exporters from Quebec, Ontario and the US Midwest," said Canadian National Railway vice president JJ Ruest.
"As a last port of call before crossing the Atlantic, this service provides shorter, more reliable transit times to final Asian and Mediterranean destinations," he said.
With 16-metre drafts, extended piers and postpanamax cranes, Halifax has the ability to triple capacity with no significant changes to existing infrastructure.
The G6's container shipping line members are APL, Hapag-Lloyd, Hyundai Merchant Marine, MOL, NYK and OOCL.
