The 'Akademik Ioffe' ran aground in the morning of Aug 24, 2018, in position 69 43 N 91 21 W near Kugaaruk, Nunavut, in the Gulf of Boothia. The expedition ship was on a cruise in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The hull remained intact, no breaches or leaks were reported. Two Canadian icebreakers were directed to assist the research ship which has an ice-strengthened hull and was built for oceanic research in areas including Arctic waters.
