GREENHOUSE gas emissions from shipping have more than quadrupled, from 4.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2017-2018 to 18.4 million tonnes in the same time period in 2023-2024, reports New York's Inside Climate News.
Most of the emissions are methane, which is shorter-lived than CO2, dissipating after about 20 years, but significantly more potent during that time.
About a third of global warming is attributed to methane, so eliminating methane emissions has become a priority in climate change mitigation efforts.
