GDANSK Port Authority (GPA) is to tender for the construction, operation and management of the External Port, a projected deep-water, transshipment facility for containers and general cargo.
Several Chinese investors have already expressed an interest in the project which will go for tender late this year, reported Bulgaria's Maritime News Journal.
Port authority president Dorothy Raben said container volume at DCT Gdansk fell 10 per cent in 2015 year on year to 1.1 million TEU due trouble with Russia, but overall cargo throughput was up.
"The throughput of the port of Gdansk this year will be 35 million tonnes, an increase of three million tonnes, so we are obliged to provide enough power to grow the Polish economy," she said.
Ms Raben said the External Port would not impede flow from the container terminal, DCT Gdansk, now undergoing a US$324 million expansion to raise capacity to three million TEU and enable it to dock 18,000 TEU ships.
