AFTER meeting with Nestle representatives during his California trip to drum up west coast cargo for is own state, Florida Governor Rick Scott, announced that he had bagged Nestle cargo for Jacksonville, reports Newark's Journal of Commerce.
It's not clear whether Governor Scott's meeting tipped the scales for Florida or the Swiss food and beverage giant had already planned the shift, but the announcement fit in well with his controversial cargo-stealing mission to California.
The Florida governor has argued that shippers frustrated with California port congestion should use Florida ports as gateways instead, reported Jacksonville-based American Shipper.
Nestle USA said it was making the move to "accommodate customer requests". Glendale, California-based Nestle USA said the company recently closed distribution centres in Puerto Rico, choosing to ship directly from the US mainland.
Thus, customers in Puerto Rico asked to pick up cargo out of the Atlanta distribution centre, which feeds Jacksonville and Savannah, over the company's Allentown DC, which serves the Philadelphia-New York area.
Said Gov Scott: "On top of Florida's great business climate and low taxes, it has 15 seaports that we have invested over US$850 million in to ensure we are poised to lead the nation in expanded international trade opportunities".
Crowed the Jacksonville Business Journal: "Not only is the governor's trip to California bringing in gold - it's bringing in chocolate."
