Fire aboard P&O ferry
On Sep 29, 2014, around 8.40 a.m. a fire broke out in the engine room of the "Pride of Canterbury" when the ferry arrived at Calais, coming from Dover, with 337 passengers on board.
The captain announced problems with the starboard engine, and the ferry was waiting for tug assistance off the port.
Meanwhile thick smoke was billowing from the starboard side. Some of the ship’s crew were wearing breathing apparatus as they tried to tackle the blaze.
The vessel was taken to a berth near the port master of Calais to facilitate emergency access for the firefighters and SMUR.
The docks were shut off. The passengers were told to congregate near the foot passengers exit. The fire was extinguished sround 10:30 a.m.
P&O has cancelled two sailings – the 9.50 a.m. Calais to Dover and the 11.10 a.m. Dover to Calais. None of the on the whole 377 persons on board were injured.
After the fire was out, the firefighters remained on board to try to determine the cause of the incident. Channel traffic continued with the other four ferries on the route.
