The 'Saris' suffered a failure of its two engines at kilometer mark 151 on the Volga–Caspian-Sea-Canal at on July 5, 2018, at 1.36 p.m. while proceeding towards the sea, bound to Aktau. The ship managed to stop at 1.44 p.m., dropping fore and aft anchors about 30 meters off a dredger, barely avoiding a collision. Wind and current turned the ship and it drifted across the channel, blocking all traffic. At 2.28 p.m.crew managed to restart one of engines, and the ship resumed sailing at a reduced speed to an anchorage at kilometer mark 170.
