THE Evergreen Group has held a naming ceremony for the Ever Lotus, a 8,452-TEU vessel and the 24th out of 45 newbuildings to be delivered since July 2012 as part of its fleet renewal programme.
The Ever Lotus is also the 15th of thirty 8,000 TEU L-type containerships that were ordered in 2010 from Samsung Heavy Industries to be received so far and is to be deployed on the Far East-Europe, replacing an older vessel.
Speaking at the ceremony Evergreen's vice group chairman, Raymond Lin, expressed hope that the vessel "will always sail the seas in full bloom. That is to say, fully loaded and bringing prosperous business to Evergreen Group".
In addition to ordering the thirty 8,000-TEU L-type containerships, the shipping line has also chartered five 8,800-TEU ships and ten 13,800-TEU vessels to "meet the vessel demands of the joint venture agreements with its partners". The delivery schedule of the 45 vessels will be completed during the first half of 2015.
The fleet will receive another 18 newbuildings in 2014 with the remaining three ships expected in 2015.
A statement from the group said that in order to complete the fleet renewal programme, the new vessels entering service will be "balanced" by a gradual redelivery of 54 chartered vessels as the terms of their charters expire.
The Ever Lotus is owned by Greencompass Marine SA (GMS), Evergreen Marine Corp's Panamanian subsidiary.
