THE Alaska Federation of Natives passed resolutions urging a gradual ban on burning basic bunker fuel to better protect the Arctic marine environment.
This was one of 30 resolutions passed at the groups annual general meeting, reported Arctic Today of Anchorage.
The resolution calls for a concerted effort to persuade decision-makers to phase out the use of heavy fuel oil, or HFO, in Arctic waters.
There is a ban on its use in Antarctic waters, but its use continues in Arctic waters even though the UN's International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is discussing new limits in the far north.
