SUSTAINABLE Shipping Initiative (SSI) lobbyists are insisting shipping to impose limits on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions as the Paris climate change conference gets underway, just as the issue has been deprioritised by the public worldwide.
SSI argues that the current UN International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations is not enough to meet the target set by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change).
"It is not commercially, environmentally or socially sustainable for shipping to continue on a business-as-usual carbon emissions pathway," SSI said, reports Seatrade Maritime of Colchester, England.
Two other lobby groups, Seas At Risk and Transport & Environment (T&E), have also released a joint statement on what they call the "elephant in the climate negotiations room".
But public support for a strong global climate deal has declined, according to a poll carried out in 20 countries, according to the BBC.
Only four now have majorities in favour of their governments setting ambitious targets at a global conference in Paris. A similar poll before the Copenhagen meeting in 2009, eight countries had majorities favouring tough action.
The poll has been provided to the BBC by research group GlobeScan. Just under half of all those surveyed viewed climate change as a "very serious" problem this year, compared with 63 per cent in 2009.
