Turkish Lloyd-RINA Collaborated for newbuildings at Ereğli Shipyard
Turkey’s National Classification Society Turkish Lloyd is expanding its operation network to better meet the needs of the sector. In this direction, a cooperation agreement has been signed with RINA, the Italian Classification Society, for classification of two tugboats that will be built by Medmarine Holding.
In this classification, “Dual Class” method will be used. Turkish Lloyd which is Turkey’s national power and RINA which is one of the founding members of IACS, have joined forces in the Med Marine project which is the most powerful and traditional companies in the Turkish maritime industry.
With this cooperation, Med Marine has lead the way for “Dual Class” in Turkey.
Amongst the participants of signing ceremony were Mehmet Kırdağlı, General Manager of Coastal Structures and Shipyards; Mustafa Çalışkan, General Manager of Maritime Trade; Başaran Bayrak, Chairman of Turkish Ship and Yacht Exporters’ Association; Feramuz Aşkın, Chairman of Chamber of Turkish Ship Engineers, Süheyl Demirtaş, Chairman of GİSAŞ, Davut Kul, Secretary General of GMO and other NGO and sectoral representatives.
Speaking at the meeting, Turkish Lloyd Chairman Mustafa Zorlu said that classification societies are in need of cooperation or merger at the global scale in order to cope with the difficult conditions of global crisis and competition. Zorlu pointed out that organizations could take the advantage of joining forces at the areas of strength of each party and this could further enable both parties to reduce costs and provide service at lower prices. Zorlu said that dual classification of Med Marine tugs would be a start for future joint work of both organizations.
Hakan Şen, President of Medmarine Holding said in his speech that the tugs would be 24 meters in length and 60 BP in power. His company is happy to work with both classification societies, Hakan Şen pointed out. Şen also said that the two tugs were specially designed by Robert Allan for Ereğli Shipyard in a project which was called RAMPARTS 2600W series.
