Happily stopped a sandbank a drunk Russian captain, otherwise the Oresund Bridge may have been scotch
Drunk captain, who stood on the deck of the ship earlier in the day ran aground a few meters from the Oresund Bridge, had not only hazardous substances as cargo, but also in the blood.
At the Copenhagen Police, journalists watched that the Russian captain had a BAC of 2.18 when police arrested him.
"He was drunk. Very drunk. 2.18 he blew it up in our breath," they said.
The large intake of alcohol could also be felt in the captain's behavior, journalists report.
The ship does not represent a hazard as it lies on the sand bank in the sound.
"So far so it is common, and so is the company's headache to get it free," says Henrik Orye.
The captain will stay in police custody. He must be prepared to judge the guard tomorrow morning if he was sober.
What happened?
In the afternoon of Mar 22, 2012, the "Terry" ran aground off Drodgen, north of the Øresunds connection. The Russian captain was positively tested for alcohol during a breathalyzer test and found to be intoxicated above the permitted level with 2,18 per thousand. The investigators thus did not dare to let him from board via fallreep. He was arrested thereupon. It was said, that it had looked like he had forgotten to turn the ship. There were no reports of oil spills from the ship which did not seem to have suffered much damage. The tanker was underway from Hirtshals to Riga and sailing in ballast when it hit a sandbank at North Røse off Kastrup, close to the island of the airport Copenhagen. Draft loss was one metre as the ship ran aground with a speed of 11 knots. A lifeboat from the airport in Kastrup was sent to the site until a patrol boat and an anti pollution vessel from the Danish Navy arrived.
