DUBAI global port operator DP World has acquired Euroports' 66 per cent share in Trilogiport, Liege Port's new trimodal container terminal, giving it control of container terminals at both ends of the Albert Canal, reports Lloyd's List.
DP World said that following the share acquisition it will take full responsibility for developing the facility, being built along the Albert Canal in northeast Belgium.
It already has operational responsibilities for Beverdonk Container Terminal in Grobbendonk at the other end of the canal. With this acquisition, DP World said it will benefit from synergies operating at both ends of the waterway.
Trilogiport is the focal point of a wider project undertaken by Liege Port Authority with the Directorate-General for Waterways and Mobility of the Public Service of Wallonia, to develop Liege into an inland logistics hub.
Spanning more than 100 hectares, Trilogiport's terminal will have a 700-metre quay and logistics park developed by the German logistics companies WDP and DL Trilogiport Deutschland.
When it opens next year, containers now handled at Liege at the breakbulk site will shift to the new terminal, enlarging the port's annual capacity to 300,000 TEU.
As well as daily sailings to Antwerp, DP World will service Trilogiport with boxes from Rotterdam and Zeebrugge with Liege port authority linking the terminal to nearby highways.
DP World sees its involvement in the project as a logical step in its expansion in northern Europe's Benelux region, giving it access to the Albert Canal, an important artery for multimode transport to and from Antwerp.
"In this way, we can immediately bridge the gap from the Port of Antwerp to the Walloon region and subsequently, to the rest of Europe," said DP World Antwerp chief Rob Harrison.
