DanPilot and Danelec have begun testing remote pilotage in Danish waters, marking a global first in maritime navigation. Approved by the Danish Emergency Management Agency, the initiative aims to enhance safety, reduce emissions, and modernize pilotage operations.
The pilot program allows ship pilots to guide vessels from a control centre in Randers using real-time data transmitted from ships via Danelec's Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) technology. This eliminates the need for physical boarding, reducing risks and fuel consumption.
The test will run for up to 18 months and cover 50 pilotages in the Kattegat and western Baltic Sea. It applies only to vessels under 13 metres draft and during non-compulsory transits.
DanPilot CEO Erik Merkes Nielsen said the project represents a 'paradigm shift' in pilotage, while Danelec CEO Casper Jensen emphasized cybersecurity as key to scaling the solution globally.
The programme is expected to be applicable to around 10 per cent of DanPilot's operations and is conducted in collaboration with shipping companies including Maersk.
