COSCO has started a twice weekly service from Yueyang, a city (pop 5.4 million) on the far reaches of the Yangtze in Hunan province, to Vietnam and Thailand, reports IHS Maritime 360.
The rotation is Yueyang, Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh, and Bangkok and back to Yueyang.
Two 200-TEU ships will be deployed from the Yueyang to Shanghai where cargo will be reloaded aboard 800-TEU ships for onward carriage to Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok.
At first, the 150-TEU ship Cosco 01 commenced its voyage from Yueyang on May 2 and its cargo is expected to arrive in Vietnam on May 21, unloading 50 TEU of chemical products, arriving in Thailand on May 24, where it discharges 40 TEU of chemical products and paper.
Compared with past services, the Cosco loop will save a week's time from Yueyang to Vietnam and Thailand, accelerating trade between Hunan and ASEAN countries.
"Driven by the 'One Belt, One Road' policy, the new service will focus on the exports of rubber and chemical products, ceramic tiles, and paper produced in Hunan province to ASEAN countries, and will import rice and fodder from these countries," said the IHS report.
