CHINA's international port operator Cosco Pacific had a slight slip of 0.7 per cent in global volumes in November, but nothing like the 8.1 per cent drop it suffered in Hong Kong.
The main Kwai Tsing terminals in Hong Kong port saw volume drop 11.2 per cent to 1.24 million TEU from 1.40 million TEU in the previous corresponding period while the non-Kwai Tsing terminals saw a slight 3.6 per cent rise in throughput to 390,000 TEU from 377,000 TEU previously.
Total volume fell from 1.78 million TEU to 1.63 million TEU in November.
Among Cosco Pacific's terminals, only the Bohai Rim and the southeast coast managed to grow volumes in November, with Bohai posting a growth rate of 3.7 per cent to 2.14 million TEU and the southeast boasting of 13.1 per cent gain to 358,000 TEU.
The Yangtze posted a 10.9 per cent fall to 752,400 TEU while in the Pearl River Delta, which includes the group's two terminals in Hong Kong, throughput was almost flat. Cosco Pacific's overseas ports meanwhile saw volumes fall 9.3 per cent to 733,600 TEU.
In the Pearl River Delta, a 7.4 per cent drop in volume to 125,200 TEU at Cosco-HIT Terminal weighed down positive performances at Yantian and at its other Hong Kong terminal, Asia Container Terminal (ACT).
Likewise at the southeast coast ports, many of which are in a ramp-up phase and start from low base performances. Individual terminals have been uneven. Growth at Xiamen Ocean Gate almost doubled to 98,400 TEU in November while at Jinjiang Pacific Ports, which has been having problems, decline continued with throughput down 27.5 per cent to 25,100 TEU.
But the older Quanzhou terminal continued to build volumes and capacity, with throughput rising 8.7 per cent to 115,400 TEU from 106,200 TEU in the previous corresponding period.
