Containers on the main deck of the 'SSL Kolkata' caught fire near Bengal in the morning of June 14, 2018. All 22 crew members were rescued by the Indian Coast Guard which deployed a patrol boat and one of its Dornier aircraft from its base at Haldia Port. The blazing ship was adrift about 55 nautical miles from Haldia in the Bay of Bengal after the fire broke out around midnight. The SAR operation took place amid rough seas and inclement weather. After the successful rescue the Coast Guard vessel 'Rajkiran' headed towards Haldia.
