FRENCH shipping group CMA CGM has received the Environment Award at the Lloyd's List Global Awards held in London.
The accolade was presented in recognition of the company's initiatives to protect the environment and its transition to power its vessels using cleaner burning liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The prize rewards the group for the work that it has been carrying out over the past few years to reduce its environmental footprint, as well as its decision to power its future vessels with liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Maritime transport is currently the most environmentally friendly mode of transport for goods. The group said it also 'innovates constantly to make its ships more environmentally-friendly; the CMA CGM Antoine De Saint Exupery thus emits less than three grams of CO2 per ton transported per kilometre, as compared with 91 grams for a truck and 470 grams for a plane'.
Furthermore, the group cut by half its CO2 emissions per container transported per kilometre between 2005 and 2015, and has set the target of achieving a further 30 per cent reduction by 2025. In 2017 alone, the group achieved a 10 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions, underscoring its commitment to achieving this goal.
Earlier in 2018 the company was also awarded for the fourth consecutive year the 'Gold Recognition Level' by the ratings agency EcoVadis, which assesses companies' corporate social responsibility, particularly through the prism of environmental protection. This evaluation positions the shipping line among the top one per cent of most responsible companies in its sector.
