FRENCH shipping giant cma CGM early levying of a US$100/TEU peak season has sparked protests and demands that the government to do something, reports Abuja's Leadership newspaper.
CMA CGM has implemented the surcharge on Nigeria-bound container cargo from China, the report says.
'The peak surcharge usually happens when there is a high transport demand, and every carrier imposes different charges as it suits them,' said the article.
Apapa Port a clearing agent Justice Chukwu, criticised the surcharge, saying it was unnecessary, adding that the government should protest.
'This is unnecessary and ill-timed, and not at this point when Nigeria's economy is wobbling. The Nigerian Shippers' Council (NSC), the agency responsible for protecting Shippers and clearing agents in the country should rise to the occasion of protecting vulnerable importers,' he said.
