FRENCH shipping line CMA CGM's Pacific Express Caribbean service (PEX 2) service has started calling at the Busan New Container Terminal (BNCT) at the port of Busan in South Korea, with the arrival of the 4,256-TEU Hammonia Calabria on October 13.
This move is a part of the carrier's plan to improve its transit time from South China to main Caribbean hubs (Panama, Jamaica, Trinidad) by reversing PEX 2 rotation schedule, connecting Asia and South America, reported Hellenic Shipping News.
The port rotation for the PEX 2 is: Chiwan, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Ningbo, Shanghai, Qingdao, Busan, Ensenada, Manzanillo (Mexico), Manzanillo (Panama), Cartagena, Kingston, Caucedo, Puerto Cabello, Port of Spain, Hong Kong.
The container terminal is expanding its capacity by adding three more ship to shore (STS) container cranes and additional yard blocks by May next year.
BNCT currently has an annual handling capacity of 1.8 million TEU, which will rise to 2.5 million TEU by May 2015. It can berth four of the world's largest container ships simultaneously with a quay length of 1,400 metres and 16-17 metre water draft.
