CMA CGM is introducing Vietnam's first fully electric container barge with support from NIKE and partner Gemadept, reports London's Port Technology International.
The barge will operate on the Mekong Delta, serving logistics flows for manufacturing and container terminals.
A solar-powered charging station is under construction at Cai Mep port, near Ho Chi Minh City.
cma CGM and Gemadept have formed a joint venture called Green River Transportation to run the service.
The barge was co-designed by CMA CGM's CMA Ships and R&D teams and will enter service in early 2026.
It will be powered by a solar farm at the Gemalink terminal expected to generate 1 GWh of green electricity annually.
CMA CGM estimates the barge will cut 778 tonnes of CO2 annually on its 180-km route.
NIKE is the first customer committed to using the barge for cargo flows between production sites and port.
The low-carbon model may be expanded to other customers and countries using inland waterways.
The initiative supports CMA CGM's 2050 Net Zero Carbon goal through low-carbon technologies and fuels.
CMA CGM has also partnered with Saigon Newport Corp to develop a new deep-water terminal in Haiphong.
