FRENCH shipping giant cma CGM has become the first major foreign shipping company to register a containership in India, signaling strong support for the country's maritime ambitions, reports Chennai's Businessline.
The 2,592-TEU CMA CGM Vitoria will now sail under the Indian flag after flying the Maltese flag. It will operate on routes linking India, West Asia, and the Red Sea.
The move follows Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to CMA CGM headquarters in France and highlights the French firm's intention to deepen its Indian presence.
Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the government is committed to expanding India's flagged fleet to boost trade resilience and maritime sector opportunities.
CMA CGM plans to register three more vessels in India and has also become the first foreign line to register a container vessel in Gujarat's GIFT City.
The company emphasized India's strategic importance and pledged continued investment in the India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor.
