THE Chinese-built Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) has made big gains last year surpassing 1.5 million TEU, reports the Colombo Page.
The terminal has set a record in 2015 with handling 1.561 million TEU representing 1.57 per cent increase over the year before and 67 per cent of this volume is from mega ships.
CICT chief executive Nelson Liu said that the cooperation extended by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, the Sri Lanka Customs and the Sri Lanka Navy contributed to the success.
The trust of customers and the support of other stakeholders within the industry also contributed to CICT's success, he added.
CICT is the currently the only deep water terminal in South Asia equipped with facilities capable of handling 18,000-TEU ships. With the gains in the CICT last year Colombo's older terminals have seen losses since they could not accommodate larger ships.
CICT received some of the largest vessels plying Asia-Europe routes in 2015. They included MSC New York (16,652 TEU), CMA CGM Marco Polo (16,020 TEU) and Edith Maersk, Estelle Maersk, Ebba Maersk, Elly Maersk and Eugene Maersk, each 14,770 TEU. Many of these are now regular callers at CICT.
CICT also added two new shipping lines - China Shipping Container line and the Korea Maritime Transport company - to provide new services to the Port of Colombo in 2015.
CICT is a joint venture Company between China Merchants Holdings (International) Co., Ltd. (CMHI) and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).
CICT, with a 2.4 million TEU capacity was constructed as part of the Colombo South Harbour Expansion Project in the Port of Colombo under a 35 year Build Operate and Transfer Agreement with SLPA. China Merchants Holdings (International) Co Ltd. (CMHI) holds 85 per cent of the partnership while the remaining 15 per cent is being held by SLPA.
