HAINAN PO Shipping (HPOS) is exiting from a third major container shipping trade following the announcement that it will terminate its China-Australia Express (CAX) service at the beginning of March, which was jointly operated with Hong Kong's TS Lines.
The Alphaliner report said the total shipping capacity operated by HPOS has fallen from 46,000 TEU at the end of 2011 to 14,000 TEU, and its ranking among the world's top container shipping carriers has slid from 30th to 64th place.
HPOS had already abandoned the transpacific and China-Mideast trades in November 2012, which it entered, respectively, in August 2010 and February 2011, reports Alphaliner.
HPOS now only operates one international service, a fortnightly shuttle connecting South China to Haiphong, using a 422-TEU vessel. It still operates domestic China services.
The CAX service kicked off in June 2010 calling at Ningbo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Shenzhen-Shekou, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Initially, the service deployed five 2,400- to 2,700-TEU ships, including three provided by TSL.
