CHICAGO Rockford International Airport (RFD) handled record one million tonnes of cargo in 2019, with the expansion of Amazon Air operations helping to boost it by 11 per cent
The airport has tripled the amount of cargo passing through its gates over the past five years. Rockford is also home to the second largest UPS hub in North America, which continues to increase its daily cargo flights. Other air cargo carriers served by the airport include ABX Air, ATI and Atlas Air.
With the airport's cargo expansions and the extra flights announced by Amazon Prime and other Amazon carriers, Rockford is quickly becoming a 'Midwest hub for e-commerce freight', it claimed, reported London's Air Cargo News.
'We continue to see the cargo numbers increase due to the partnerships RFD has secured and nurtured throughout the past several years,' said executive director Mike Dunn.
'In addition to our larger partners, we've been able to secure several additional organisations which further impacts our region's job growth and economic development.'
Last July, the Federal Aviation Administration released its all-cargo data for 2018 which ranked RFD as the 19th largest cargo airport in the US, with growth of 55 per cent year on year.
