A RO-RO auto shipping service from river city Luzhou to Shanghai has been inaugurated, which will benefit the automobile and machinery manufacturing industry in the neighboring city Chengdu and regions around, local newspaper Sichuan Daily reports.
Luzhou port is also planning to launch river-sea intermodal service via Wuhan to Japan and Korea, so that Chengdu-manufactured automobile exports can transship via Luzhou to overseas markets.
Luzhou is experiencing rapid growth in its container throughput since the beginning of this year. From January to June, it handled 68,016 TEU, 28 per cent up on 2012. Its container throughput is expected to exceed 160,000 TEU by year's end.
Luzhou is also operating a container shipping service to Shanghai, which started operation in 2011, uses 3,600-tonne ships that can carry up to 300 to 325 TEU.
In June, Luzhou also started a river-sea intermodal shipping service via Wuhan to Taiwan, shortening shipping time from Sichuan to Taiwan to only 16 days compared to 20 days by conventional way.
