GLOBAL engineering firm Cavotec has secured a EUR10 million (US$13.5 million) order for design, manufacture and installation of its Moormaster automated mooring units for a port handling vessels of a capacity up to 13,000 TEU.
Cavotec chief executive officer Ottonel Popesco said the order is a sign that the Moormaster is gaining traction in the market. "The scale and location of this order represents a tremendous opportunity for the group," he said.
Moormaster is a vacuum-based automated mooring technology that eliminates the need for conventional mooring lines. Remote controlled vacuum pads recessed in, or mounted on the quayside or pontoons, moor and release vessels in seconds.
The units cut the time it takes to moor and release vessels by dampening vessel movement along the berth which means fewer interruptions to the loading and unloading of vessels.
The unnamed port acquiring the units will benefit from the dampen of vessel motion by as much as 75 per cent due to it suffering long wave effects and high winds.
Cavotec is to commission an independent engineering study that will make recommendations on technical details and performance targets of the application. The contract includes training of local based technicians who will provide technical support for the customer following unit installation.
