Major container lines have accelerated blank sailings ahead of China's Golden Week holiday with capacity reductions coinciding with the dip in demand due to incoming US tariffs, reported Oslo's TradeWinds.
Sea-Intelligence reports that between weeks 34 and 38, carriers have withdrawn 143,600 TEU from Asia-North America West Coast, 89,900 TEU from Asia-North America East Coast, 189,400 TEU from Asia-North Europe and 120,500 TEU from Asia-Mediterranean.
These withdrawals represent capacity cuts of 13.6 per cent, 14.4 per cent, 17 per cent and 16.7 per cent respectively across the four trade lanes.
Swiss-based MSC has blanked five sailings from Asia to the US and Canada through to October, with six additional cancellations affecting Asia-Mediterranean and Asia-North Europe routes.
The Gemini Cooperation cancelled October sailings from Asia to the Arabian Gulf to reduce disruption and improve schedule reliability during the holiday period.
While seasonal adjustments are routine ahead of factory closures in Asia, Sea-Intelligence noted that this year's tariff-driven volatility makes capacity control a key stabilizing measure.
