THE EUROPEAN airports of Brussels and Frankfurt experienced different freight traffic demand patterns in March, with pure air cargo down at Brussels by 12 per cent year on year to 44,532 tonnes.
Yet, Frankfurt's airport operator Fraport registered 0.5 per cent growth to 198,700 tonnes, ending two months of decreases.
However, first quarter cargo volumes dipped by 1.6 per cent year on year to 519,028 tonnes. Fraport said the drop reflected 'the worldwide economic slowdown.'
Brussels blamed the 12 per cent decline in March pure air cargo volumes on industrial action by air traffic controllers and the general slowdown in European cargo demand, reported London's Air Cargo News.
All cargo segments at Brussels airport recorded negative figures, with cargo traffic down 17.2 per cent, express cargo down 14.6 per cent and belly cargo was down 2.8 per cent.
On the other hand, road feeder service volumes increased by four per cent. If the truck volumes are included, airport volumes were 8.1 per cent down on March last year.
The airport also suffered a first quarter decrease in air cargo volumes of 8.5 per cent year on year.
