THE new deep-water Baltic port of Bronka being built on the southern bank of the Gulf of Finland outside St Petersburg has taken delivery of two Liebherr STS P167 L (WS) container gantry cranes with a 51-metres boom, handling 18 containers across the deck.
In twin-lift operations, the cranes each have a lifting capacity of 65 tons. The equipment turns Bronka into a multi-functional cargo handling facility for clearing some of the world's biggest mega-ships.
The port will be equipped with a total of four postpanamax container gantry cranes manufactured at Liebherr's Rostok plant on the German Baltic coast.
"We shall be using only highly efficient equipment and cutting-edge technologies in the new port of Bronka. Liebherr's STS cranes are equipped with state-of-the art speed control systems, an advanced loader control system with high torsional stiffness, as well as high-grade metal structures," said the Bronka port CEO Alexei Shukletsov.
The port comprises two terminals and a logistics centre. Covering 107 hectares. The container terminal offers five berths along quays extending 1,200 metres.
The ro-ro terminal covers 57 hectares, and with a quay length of 710 metres to enable the simultaneous handling of three ships.
In the first development phase, the handling capacity of the container terminal will be 1.45 million TEU per year, plus 260,000 units at the RoRo terminal.
The draft will be 14.4 metres by the end of the year, but only 11.2 metres when the port opens in September to accommodate ships of up to 8,100 TEU. The port has the potential to dredge to 16 metres alongside.
In June a ship arriving from the port of Hanko in Finland delivered the first three of ten RTG cranes manufactured by the Finnish crane builder Konecranes.
With a lifting capacity of 50 tons beneath the spreader, these cranes have a stacking height of one-over-five standard containers and can reach over a stack width of six containers plus discharge and load rail tracks.
