A crew member used a kebab grill to keep warm, the MCA said
A ship has been detained in Birkenhead docks because of the squalid conditions on board.
Most Sky, which is owned by a Turkish company but registered in Panama, was inspected by Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) on 8 November.
They discovered the ship had no heating, its galley, toilets and bathrooms were filthy and there was insufficient food for the crew.
Inspector Phil Lewis said it also had the worst engine room he had seen.
"It became evident that the vessel was in a very poor condition," he said
"The most surprising thing... is that the vessel was actually less than five-years-old.
A crew member used a kebab grill to keep warm, the MCA said "Normally when we go down to vessels that are relatively young like this one we would not expect to find too much wrong."
The ship must now be cleaned up before it can leave the docks.
Meanwhile, 14 crew members must remain in the area until the ship can leave.
Tommy Molloy, of the International Transport Workers' Federation, said: "This one is one of the worst that we have seen."
He said one member of the crew used a kebab grill to keep warm.
The ship must now be cleaned up before it can leave. The vessel is listed as operated by Erler Shipping & Trading, a Turkish company
registered in St Kitts. It could not be contacted.
