Boston's annual container throughput surges 12pc to 247,329 TEU
THE Port of Boston's Paul W Conley Container Terminal ended the 2016 fiscal year at the end of June with a total throughput volume of 247,329 TEU, a 12 per cent increase from the 2015 fiscal year, reports American Shipper.
The terminal kicked off the new fiscal year by setting an all-time monthly record in August with a throughput of 26,334 TEU, the Massachusetts Port Authority said.
"The strategic planning and investment being done to keep the Port of Boston competitive and an East Coast leader is behind these record-breaking numbers," Port of Boston director Lisa Wieland said.
Looking ahead, the Port of Boston will be undergoing various upgrades thanks to funding from the US Department of Transportation's FASTLANE grant programme, along with funding from the Economic Development Bill signed by Governor Charlie Baker in August.
The Conley Terminal will be upgraded with an additional berth and three new cranes, while the Boston Harbour will be dredged to accommodate 12,000-TEU vessels.
